Things to Know

It’s up to all skiers and snowboarders to be prepared for a fun day on the slopes, and stay safe. This is to both your benefit and to the benefit of others you will meet while on the mountain.  If you are unsure of something, please ask a Blue Mountain Employee for assistance. THANK YOU for doing your part to help keep everyone safe!

What to Wear

AS PER OUR COVID GUIDELINES, FACE COVERINGS ARE REQUIRED.

From the top down:

Put a lid on it! We highly recommend wearing a helmet. It will protect your head and keep it warm as well!

Reduce the glare! Goggles are better thank sunglasses on cold days as they offer protection from wind and help keep you warm.

Pull it up to cover the lower part of your face on cold days. Scarves are not recommended as the loose ends could get tangled in lift equipment!

Layer! Layer! Layer! A good base of long underwear topped by a turtleneck or sweater will go a long way in keeping you warm. A winter jacket is a must! Choose something warm and waterproof.

Layer again! Start with a good pair of long underwear and build from that. Wear warm, waterproof pants to keep you dry. Jeans are not recommended.

Say no to knit! Water-resistant mittens or gloves.  Mittens are generally warmer than gloves and easier for kids to manage.

Happy Feet = a Happy Day. Wear ONE pair of LONG ski socks – do not layer socks!

We offer clothing from head to toe in our retail shops, along with sunglasses, lip balm, hand warmers, and other items.

Your sanctuary on the slopes.

Where to Go

Please arrive at the Valley Lodge (bottom of the mountain) to start your day! ALL lessons should print their ticket using the barcode from their confirmation email at the pick up box located outside the lodge. Children involved in youth programs should be dropped off at the Frontier Center (attached to our Valley Lodge), all other lessons head to rentals located inside the sliding doors, and proceed to the lesson meeting area.

Tips for Taking Lessons

At Blue Mountain Resort, our goals are for guests to be safe, learn, and HAVE FUN!  We have partnered with Snow Operating again this year to provide Terrain-Based Learning (TBL) to help our guests achieve these goals.  While your friends may take you up to the top of our mountain and say “GO!”, our instructors guide students through the skills at their own pace, ensuring that they learn to stop and turn with confidence. With TBL, we shape the snow to maximize our guests’ success on it.  We form gentle rollers, mini-half pipes, and banked turns to give our beginners expert sensations! Even the most nervous students can learn to ski or ride with ease knowing that the snow is set up to help with their success.

Terrain-Based Learning

Don’t borrow a friend’s equipment! Let us provide the perfect fit (rentals included with Family & Friends package) with the latest sliding technology. Comfort first! Come well-rested, well-hydrated, well-fed, and ready to learn!  (Especially for our littlest guests!) Stay warm as the temps drop! Wear the right clothing (see our “what to wear” tab below) to keep toasty and dry.

Safety on the Slopes

Responsibility Code for ALL Skiers & Snowboarders

Common Sense is one of the most important things to keep in mind and practice on the slopes. The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) believes education, helmet use, respect and common sense are crucial to keep in mind when cruising. NSAA developed Your Responsibility Code to help skiers and riders be aware that there are elements of risk in snowsports that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce.

1. Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people & objects.

2. People ahead of you have the right of way.  It is your responsibility to avoid them.

3. Do not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above.

4. Whenever starting downhill or merging onto a trail, look uphill and yield to others.

5. Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.

6. Observe all posted signs and warnings.  Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.

7. Smart Style & Park Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

Smart Style & Park Safety

Smart Style & Park Safety are all about safety – having the knowledge and the plan to enjoy freestyle terrain. The five points of Park Smart include:

Start Small Work your way up. Build your skills.
Make a Plan Every feature. Every time.
Always Look Before you drop.
Respect The features and other users.
Take it EasyKnow your limits. Land on your feet.

How to Ski: A Beginner’s Guide – Part 1

What to Wear Skiing, Snowboarding, or Snow Tubing!

To have the most fun on the mountain you need to start your day by dressing for success! This includes the proper layers to stay warm AND equipment to keep you safe. If you need any of the recommended gear below, visit True Blue Mountain Sports Shop! There is a True Blue Location at both the Summit and Valley lodges.

  • True Blue Mountain Sports Shop Hours
    • Monday-Friday: 8:30am-8pm
    • Saturday & Sunday: 7:30am-8pm
    • Holidays: 7:30am-8pm

How to Dress and Layer

Wearing a jacket and pants that are both wind and water resistant will keep you warm and comfortable so you can focus on fun!

A good base of long underwear topped by a turtleneck or sweater will go a long way in keeping you warm. You can always remove or add layers throughout the day.

Wear water-resistant mittens or gloves- avoid any knit material! Mittens are generally warmer than gloves and easier for kids to manage.

Comfortable feet are key! Wear only ONE pair of long socks and avoid cotton!

Goggles or sunglasses will help protect your eyes from sun, wind, and help you see on a snowy day.

Face coverings are REQUIRED on the mountain while entering any facilities, while in lift lines, while riding the lift, and any other time you are within 6ft of another guest. A neck gaiter will keep you both warm, and safe!

If you are skiing or snowboarding a helmet is highly recommended. If you do not have your own, helmets can be rented in our rental shop or purchased from True Blue Mountain Sports Shop.

In addition to making sure your dressed properly for your day on the mountain, make sure your gear is in proper condition! True Blue Mountain Sports Shop offers wax, edge and binding services. Equipment in need of servicing should be dropped off at the Valley True Blue Mountain Sports shop location during business hours.
